The Skatalites created, originated and innovated the Ska music that eventually become Rocksteady and Reggae. Formed in Jamaica in May 1964 they began performing regularly and were widely regarded as the best musicians in the country after meeting and being trained at the now famous Alpha Boys School. By fusing traditional Calypso and Mento music with elements of the new American Rock and Roll, Jazz and Blues they created a new upstroke ‘Ska’ sound that soon become to symbolize and give confidence to a newly independent Jamaica.
As a backing band for top musicians such as Toots and the Maytals, Prince Buster, The Wailing Wailers featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Desmond Dekker amongst many others they were regularly playing on some of the most famous music of the era. This led to them releasing numerous albums as The Skatalites over decades, culminating in their most recent album ‘Platinum Ska’ released in August 2016.
Despite decades of music being produced since the 1960s The Skatalites remain more popular than ever and are regularly filling 1000 plus venues across the world and have headlined some of the world’s top music festivals. This show in Hong Kong is their first full headline set and will also be their only stop outside Japan on their Asian tour. Hang Out Youth Outreach will be one of the smallest venues on their world tour and will be an intimate experience with true legends of the world music scene.
